Resident voices: "This
Place Keeps a Lot of Families Together" I entered the public housing system in 1954. after growing up in northwest D.C. At the time I was living with my husband at his mom's house. I wasn't raised to do live like that. It took me about two or three years to get a place in Arthur Capper. My husband worked for a large company at the time. In the early 1960's I was moved into my current place of residence. I started working as a Nurse in 1960. My husband and I got divorced in the early 1970's. I got injured on the job in 1969, so now I get disability checks. I thought about moving out of public housing but when I got hurt it wasn't possible with my children being so young. About HOPE VI, I just don't like it. HOPE VI to me is nothing but a big bunch of lies. I think HOPE VI will only allow a handful of people back in. Those will be the "special people"- people who know people who know people. It's going to be hard for me to move and they places they're giving me much smaller than my place now. I am going to have to stay in public housing or move in with my husband to be if he moves out. I would like to see more people coming back after HOPE VI, instead of just throwing us out like a sack of rotten potato's. I think this place keeps a lot of families together and I hate to see them getting pushed around like that. |
